Hand Paperweight, Polished Brass
$330.00
Handmade in Austria.
Carl Auböck model #4223 ‘Hand’ brass paperweight. Designed in the 1950s, this beautifully refined Viennese paperweight is handmade in polished brass.
“The hand-shaped design is perhaps one of the most significant of the Auböck icons. It is a universal hand, an ageless hand, a positive hand. It is a hand that possibly warns against something or simply points something out. This hand comes in the form of a paperweight (one of them was and still is on Walter Gropius’s desk), a cork screw with a bamboo sheath, and a bottle stopper. Aside from its timeless signalling quality, the hand has many other functions that give it a playfully ironic appeal.”
The Viennese workshop of Carl Auböck, exists now for over 120 years and for four generations. Currently produced by Carl Auböck IV in the original Auböck Werkstätte in the 7th district of Vienna using the same exacting standards, high-quality materials, original moulds and techniques of his legendary grandfather remains among the last of it’s kind. The archive today includes more than 4,500 designs.
Please note each piece is handmade. Imperfections on the surface reflect the handmade nature and should not be considered defects.
