Maker’s Story

After five years Belgian architect, Evi Radoes graduated from the Academie Haspengouw. As a ceramist, she has now built a little world of her own in her backyard where she loves creating with clay.

Her architectural background contributes to her view on design. Her style is timeless and serene, leaning towards minimalism. Evi likes to keep things simple, elegant and functional. Having a very soft spot for fresh shapes, clean lines and muted colours. Quality, meticulously selected materials and understated detail are her requisites. Tranquility is always her main goal.

The combination of tactile textured clay with washes of subtle glaze makes every piece of ceramics unique. Each item is carefully thrown on the wheel and mindfully finished by Evi herself. Small marks and irregularities are a natural and captivating part of this traditional process. Every single piece of clay has gone through her loving hands. Pouring her heart into all of her ceramic creations.

Evi is living her happily ever after with Jan and their six-year-old twins Axel & Sophia. She loves it when the radio sings good songs and the cat spins a good spin. A sucker for sun kissed skin and eventide at a deep blue sea. She dreams of untouched beaches and loves to gather smiles from strangers. Despite her secret insecurities, she chooses to live a conscious and slow life. For Evi, building a business out of her passion is frightening and fulfilling at the same time.

Maker’s Story

Borja Moronta is originally from Asturias, northern Spain. He settled in Edinburgh after graduating as an Architect in 2016 (Madrid Polytechnic University). Throughout university, he had a strong interest in different disciplines such as photography, ceramics or woodwork, and always felt drawn to that architecture which focuses on the materiality of the buildings.

His pottery practice began at the beginning of 2018, as part of a recovery process from a severe surgery due to nerve damage on his left hand. He joined Edinburgh Ceramics Workshop evening classes and soon became a member. Borja worked his way through the Edinburgh Ceramics Workshop structure and became part of their Incubator programme for emerging ceramicists in July 2019, giving him the foundation to go from a hobby potter to a professional potter. Soon after Borja was fortunate to gain large commissions from both Fhior and Spry Wines, in Edinburgh. He then went on to set up his own studio just a year later.

Today, based in his Edinburgh studio, in Abbeymount, inspired by distinguished architects, Peter Zumthor and Tadao Ando, Borja makes ceramics that follow basic, calmed and natural forms on a soft tone palette. Each piece is individually crafted on the potter’s wheel and throughout all the stages, therefore showing all the nature of handmade.

“I hope that when I’m making, whatever I make becomes a special part of somebody’s day for example, but also becomes part of their daily lives. I think that’s why I also enjoy making tableware so much as it is always on the table, people share meals and they have fun, and they have beautiful moments together. Everyone’s got a favourite mug or remembers moments like certain Christmas dinners together, and having my work be part of people’s beautiful moments is something I have really enjoyed.”

Luke Eastop

Maker’s Story

Luke Eastop is a third-generation ceramicist based in Margate, Kent. He worked as an artist and designer before taking up ceramics in the studio of his late grandfather, the potter Geoffrey Eastop.

His background training is in graphic design and more recently he has worked as a chef. Both occupations have informed the development of his work, focusing on pared-down ceramic pieces, exploring the basic material qualities of clay, form, function and utility.

“My journey into working with clay started at the house and studio of my grandfather. I grew up surrounded by his work and this provided an environment that was especially formative. His studio was an aggregation of a lifetime of work; sacks of long-discontinued materials, notebooks of glaze recipes, throwing notes and sketches going back to the 1950s. The walls and shelves were full of curiosities and ephemera, a cow’s skull, a shard of German saltware, a faded newspaper cut-out of a ballerina next to one of the patterned flank of a whale shark. After my grandfather died, I moved there to work in his studio, and learned to make my own ceramics.”

Luke Eastop’s work explores form and material though systematic processes and a dialogue between wheel-thrown objects and drawn, geometric investigations. This approach is an extension of previous work involving experimental design, typography and map-making and an interest in mathematics and geometry. His ceramic works and drawings are exhibited in London and New York.
